This place of worship was built in 1615 and was financed by the Spanish king, Philip III. Done in a Renaissance style, it has a Greek cross layout and is topped by an elegant dome. |
St. Francis houseThe significance of this church stems from the fact that it was built over the remains of the house that belonged to St. Francis father. Inside, visitors can see the smallroom in which young Francis was locked up by his father for having taken fabric from his store, which the saint sold in order to be able to repair the Church of St. Damian. Visitors can go through the convent to see some of the rooms in which Francis spent his childhood. Also of interest is the drapers shop in which Francis helped his father sell cloth. This was where Francis first demonstrated his generosity, such as the time he clothed a poor man. This was also where he had his prophetic visions and permanently withdrew from his family. The house was purchased by the Friars Minor, who built the church over it. |

San Francesco Piccolino (Little St. Francis)This is located behind the church and, as legend would have it, it was here that Monna Pica gave birth to St. Francis. Located inside the convent is a very fascinatingmuseum with a collection of prints, etchings, ceramics, furniture, fabrics and ancient coins. There is also a rich library that contains an invaluable collection of incunabula, illuminated manuscripts, books and documents on the Franciscan Order. |
